The Amalfi Coast Travel Rules (2022)

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most famous and desirable destinations in Italy. Just the name conjures images of pastel colored houses hugging souring cliffs, and amazing views of the Mediterranean. And if you’ve ever visited during peak season, miles of backed-up traffic.

As of 2022, the Amalfi Coast limited tourist access with a number plate system for rental cars.

Now, rental cars can only access the Amalfi Coast Drive, the 22-mile stretch between Vietri sul Mare and Positano, on dates that correspond to their license plates. Vehicles with number plates ending in an odd number can use the road on odd-numbered dates, and those with even number plates can drive it on even-numbered dates.

These rules apply to the Holy Week around Easter, from April 24 to May 2, weekends from June 15 to September 30, and between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. for the entire month of August.

The rules do not apply to buses, taxis, and car services, so it’s important to take that into consideration when you’re trying to decide how to get to the Amalfi Coast.
